Look Out for These Summer Flooring Threats

Summer is right around the corner.  With summer comes a lot of things that can cause some serious damage to your floor.  While cleaning and vacuuming regularly can surely help to keep your floors clean, being on guard for these little dangers can go a long way to preventing permanent damage to your flooring whether it is hardwood or carpeting.

Bare Feet and What they Bring Inside

It can be your barefoot toddler, the teenager who refuses to keep their flip flops on or even the adult who loves the feel of garden dirt on their feet.  Whomever it is, when they come walking through your home with those dirty bare feet they are going to track in all sorts of dirt, mud and grass.

Remember before you use your vacuum on these things to make sure that there isn’t anything wet that came in.  Using your vacuum to clean up wet spots can actually damage your vacuum cleaner.  Use a towel or rag to clean up the wet stuff and then use your vacuum to get what is left.

If mud and dirt are left on your hardwood floors or carpet it can actually get ground into the surface as people walk over top.  This leads to dulling of hardwood and staining of carpets.  Make sure to clean any visible dirt up as quickly as you can.

Pets Shed Lots of Fur for you to Vacuum

If you own anything larger than a fish or a hamster you are going to have to deal with pet fur.  Pets grow extra fur to keep warm in the winter, which means as summer rolls around that fur needs to come off to stay cool.  Usually that shed fur ends up on the floor and in every corner that you have in your home.

Before using your vacuum get up as much as you can by hand.  Pet fur is notorious for clogging up hoses and rollers that keep your vacuum cleaner working properly.  If you just jump win with the vacuum and try to get up all that pet fur you are going to end up filling your bag quickly and possibly clogging up your hose.  Taking time to pick up the really big clumps can save you in time and repairs in the future.

Pool Water Should Stay in the Pool

If you have a pool and a way back into your house near that pool then you are probably going to end up with pool water in the house at some point.  Pool water has lots of chemicals that can do pretty serious damage to your flooring.  Those same chemicals can do an equal amount of damage to your vacuum;  even more than regular water.  Make sure to thoroughly clean up all pool water by hand before using your vacuum.
