Should I Get An Upright or Canister Vacuum?

So it is time to get a new vacuum cleaner. There are lots of options available for you to choose from, but which one is the best? The first thing you need to do is narrow down what type of vacuum cleaner you want to get. There are two main choices: upright or canister. Each has some advantages and disadvantages, depending on what you want to do with them. So let’s put them head to head to see whether and upright or canister vacuum is right for you.

Where are You Going to Use It?

The first question that you need to ask yourself when deciding between an upright or canister vacuum is, “Where do I plan on using your vacuum cleaner most?” Traditionally, canister vacuums were used on bare floors like hardwood, linoleum or tile. Upright vacuum cleaners were traditionally used for carpets. While you can still stick to this, it isn’t necessarily the case anymore.

Of course, if you have a combination of bare floors and carpeting like most people do, then the choice might not be as clear. You could go with what you have more of, or you could look further to see if one or the other stands out in another category.

Maneuverability

Once you have thought about the surface that you are going to be vacuuming most, start thinking about the things that are in the rooms as well. If you are going to be attempting to maneuver around tight spaces or have lots of tables you need to clean under, you may want to pick a canister.

Canister vacuums are much more capable of getting into tight spaces because they carry most of the weight and bulk in the canister. This is different than uprights, which are less maneuverable because they are a one piece unit. Most uprights do have detachable hoses and attachments to add to their mobility, however.

Storage

What the canisters gain in maneuverability, they lose in ease of storage. Uprights are at their best when they are being stored away in the corner of a closet only to be brought out to do a job before they get tucked away again.

Canisters are a little more bulky. Not only do you have to have a place to put the canister, there is a bulky hose and also the attachments which might not store easily. If closet space is at a premium where you live, then you might want to think twice about a canister vacuum.

Price

While there are plenty of price points that can match your budget in both, in general a canister is going to run you a little bit more than an upright will. Remember that no matter what type you choose, more expensive isn’t always a better product. Pick one that fits your budget as well as your closet.
