Be Kind to Your Vacuum for Holiday Cleanup

So the holidays are over, and it is time to put away your favourite decorations for the year. That means sweeping up the messes that are left behind by all of the fun that you had. That also means your vacuum cleaner might be pulling double duty to help with the mess removal. Remember, while it is a wonderful tool, there are some things that you should definitely avoid vacuuming. Here is a reminder of what you should avoid picking up with your vacuum cleaner.

Tinsel

This isn’t as big of an issue if you don’t have a roller on your vacuum cleaner, but if you do have on, then you should avoid using it to pick up large bunches of fallen tinsel. Two things can happen if you try to pick up too much tinsel at once or even at all.

First, the tinsel can get wrapped around the roller bar, preventing it from spinning. If you don’t notice this it can eventually do damage to the belts and require you to take your vacuum in for repair.

The second thing: clogs. Tinsel tends to stick together in big balls. This means that it can get stuck in your hose and cause a clog that you need to have cleaned out.

The best thing to do is pick up as much tinsel as you can by hand and then use something like a lint brush to pick up the remainder from the carpeting.

Pine Needles

If you manage to leave your tree up for a few days too, long you may find your floor covered with pine needles. While it might be easier at first to pull out the vacuum and start sucking them up, your vacuum will eventually stop working if you do so.

The needles, like tinsel, tend to bunch up and will cause a clog in your hoses. In some rare cases they can even punch small holes in your hoses, causing some pretty serious damage.

It is best to avoid sucking up large amounts of pine needles. Try to get as many as you can by hand or with a broom, and if you must vacuum them up, be very careful to get small amounts of them at a time. Remember that they can fill your bag up very quickly, so empty frequently, and you should be ok.

Broken Glass

Whether it is that piece of wine glass someone dropped or a decoration that decided to fall, you may find broken glass during your clean up. Never vacuum broken glass. It can cause serious damage to your vacuum, or even get shot out at someone, hurting them.
